Source of amniotic fluid

amniotic fluid in the first trimester of pregnancy – dialysate for maternal serum;

Amniotic fluid after the second trimester – fetal urine;

Amniotic fluid - fetal lung in the third trimester, 350ml daily secreted from the alveoli to the amniotic cavity.

Amniotic fluid volume

8 weeks gestation - 5~10ml

10 weeks gestation – about 30ml

20 weeks gestation – about 400ml

38 weeks gestation – approx. 1000ml (maximum)

40 weeks gestation – about 800ml

Post-term pregnancy (≥ 42 weeks) – can be reduced to less than 300ml (less and less)
