In 1909, Henan Polytechnic University (hereinafter referred to as "Henan Polytechnic"); Jiaozuo Road and Mining School, the predecessor of Henan Polytechnic University (HPU), was born in Jiaozuo on the bank of the Yellow River and the sun of Taihang, becoming the first mining higher learning institution in China and the earliest higher learning institution in Henan Province. The school has gone through Fuzhong Mining University, Private Jiaozuo Engineering College, National Northwest Institute of Technology, National Jiaozuo Engineering College, and Jiaozuo Mining College (referred to as "Jiaozuo Mining Institute"); English: Jiaozuo Mining Institute, English abbreviation "JMI") and Jiaozuo Engineering Institute (abbreviation "Jiaogong"); In 2004, it was renamed Henan Polytechnic University. It is a university jointly built by Henan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Emergency Management, and a university of the national "Central and Western Universities Basic Capacity Construction Project". In 2020, it will be selected as a characteristic backbone university construction university in Henan Province, and in 2021, it will be selected as a "double first-class" engineering university in Henan Province.

In the first half of the 20th century, many scholars such as CAI Yuanpei, the famous educator, Sun Yueqi, the geologist Weng Wenhao and Zhang Zhonglu, Zhang Qinglian and Zhang Bosheng successively taught at the University, leading the University to bear the historical responsibility of training senior professional talents in industry and mining, and making special contributions to the revitalization of national industry, national economic development and social civilization progress.
