Henan University is a national "double first-class" university with a long history, complete disciplines, distinct professional characteristics and profound cultural heritage.

Founded in 1912, Henan University was originally named Henan Preparatory School for Studying Abroad in the United States. The first president was Mr. Lin Boxiang. The campus was built on the site of the former Tribute Yuan of Henan Province. Later, it went through the stages of Zhongzhou University, National Kaifeng Sun Yat-sen University (also known as the National Fifth Sun Yat-sen University), and provincial Henan University, and was upgraded to National Henan University in 1942. In 1952, some of the faculties were established independently or merged into sister universities, and the main school was renamed Henan Normal College. Later, through the stages of Kaifeng Normal College and Henan Normal University, the name of Henan University was restored in 1984. In October 2008, the university entered the ranks of universities jointly built by the provinces and ministries. In September 2017, the university was selected as the first batch of national "double first-class" construction universities. In February 2022, the university was once again selected as a national "double first-class" construction university. Over the past 111 years, the University has adhered to the motto of "bright virtue, new people, and only the best", formed the school spirit of "unity, diligence, rigor and simplicity" and the university spirit of "perseverance and perseverance" as the core, trained more than 700,000 talents of various types, and made outstanding contributions to the revitalization of education, scientific and technological innovation, cultural inheritance, social progress and human civilization.

Henan University is a comprehensive, research-oriented university with 13 disciplines, including literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, education, art and crossover. It has 40 faculties (teaching and research departments), 92 undergraduate specialties, 45 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 35 categories authorized for master's degrees, 21 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 20 post-doctoral research mobile stations, and 11 disciplines ranked in the top 1% of ESI world rankings. 82 undergraduate majors have entered the "Double Million Plan" of first-class undergraduate major construction. The university has Zhengzhou Longzihu campus, Kaifeng Minglun Campus (modern buildings are national key cultural relics protection units) and Jinming campus, covering a total area of more than 5,500 mu. The university has more than 50,000 full-time students, more than 4,700 faculty members, including 6 academicians and members of the faculty, 26 national leading talents such as Changjiang Scholars, National Jieqing, "10,000 people Plan" leading talents, and 15 national young talents. It has 3 national key laboratories, 1 national field scientific observation and research station, 2 national key social science research platforms, 3 national and local joint engineering research centers (engineering laboratories), 4 laboratories (research institutes) of Henan Province, 5 key laboratories (centers) of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, and a number of national education, research and training bases. It runs Henan University Press and 16 academic journals, with a total collection of nearly 13 million volumes. It has established friendly cooperative relations with 196 universities in 39 countries and regions.
